Saying it with paper: Artist Roy Karathara with his works at an exhibition in Kozhikode.

An exhibition of paper collages and charcoal-paintings on ‘friendship,’ titled ‘Changathikkoottu’ at the Lalitha Kala Academy Art Gallery here, gave a fresh shade of brilliance to the International Friendship Day celebrations here.

The collages, artistically crafted with friendship as its central theme, is artist Roy Karathra’s tribute to all those who “value friendship and celebrate it in passionate ways.” Most of them are the artist’s take on the changing characters and chemistry of friendship as an emotion shared across the world. Some like ‘Hide and Seek’ and ‘Kite Runners’ displayed here delve deep into the nostalgic memories of childhood friendships, while some others like the ‘Camp Fire’ and ‘Mobile Friendship’ dwell manifestly on the modern day celebration of comradeship.

As good as paintings

The unique style of Roy’s collages makes them look like paintings. One can distinguish them from a painting only through a close look. “I give special attention to the finishing touches of my collages,” says Roy, who has also experimented with some titles like “Paper Boats” giving it a three-dimension effect.

This is the third exhibition of Roy at the same venue on different themes. “I do paint, but I enjoy making collages more,” says the artist, who also has charcoal paintings with friendship as its theme on the show.

People exchange wristbands, present gifts, or give cards and flowers on occasions like Friendship Day. “This also is a way of celebrating the special occasion,” say Roy. The exhibition, inaugurated by writer U.A. Khadar, will end on August 5.
