‘Only few ryots able to derive benefits of field research’

Staff Reporter

Kakinada: The extension of agricultural technology from laboratories to the field plays a crucial role in securing higher and best quality yields. Most of the farmers have misconceptions about modern farming methods. Their doubts need to be cleared if they were to achieve higher productivity, faster and at cheaper costs, said Collector Gopalakrishna Dwivedi. Addressing the annual meeting of Agriculture Department’s Zonal Research and Extension Advisory Council here on Sunday, Mr. Dwivedi said a lot of research was going into agriculture but only few farmers were able to derive its benefit due to various reasons. Farmers have to be really enabled to use modern techniques of farming. Only then the purpose of research would be served.

Scarcity

The Collector sought adequate focus to be laid on all three types of lands in the district: delta, uplands and agency.

He suggested that farm mechanization would help mitigate the scarcity of manual labourers and advised the farmers to keep themselves abreast with the latest developments in their sector. Acharya N.G. Ranga Agricultural University Vice-Chancellor P. Raghava Reddy said farmers should contribute their mite to National Food Security Mission (NFSM) by achieving higher yields with the help of modern techniques. It has been targeted under the NFSM to produce an additional quantity of 30 lakh tonnes of rice to mitigate the scarcity of food grains.

This requires enhancement of the average productivity from 27 to 30 bags per acre. Acharya N.G Ranga Agricultural University Director (Extension) L.G Giri Rao, Associate Director of Research P Satyanarayana Reddy, Joint Directors of Agriculture T Nandaiah (East Godavari) and N Venkateswarulu (West Godavari) were among the participants.
