PUDUCHERRY: The cost of onions has shot up in Puducherry owing to low supply and increase in demand in the last few weeks. However, the prices of other vegetables, including tomatoes and potatoes, continue to be normal. According to vendors, onions used to sell from Rs. 6 to Rs. 8 a kg . The price has now increased to Rs. 12 to Rs. 15 a kg. “Onions are procured from northern States such as Maharashtra. The onion season is coming to an end and the demand has increased, which has led to the rise in the cost,” A.M. Murugan, a wholesale vegetable dealer, said. Though the prices of vegetables were relatively low in the market, vegetable vendors were getting poor business since July. “We used to get a business of Rs. 20,000 a month earlier, but now the figures touch only Rs. 8,000 to Rs. 12,000. We hope to get better business this August,” he said. In the retail market, the cost per kg of tomatoes was Rs. 4, while that of beans was Rs. 16. The rate of small onions was Rs. 18 and carrot Rs. 12. The prices of other vegetables are as follows: potatoes - Rs. 9 a kg, cauliflower- Rs. 15, cabbage- Rs. 6, lady’s finger - Rs. 12, peas - Rs. 24, ginger - Rs.45, beetroot- Rs. 8, drumstick- Rs. 21 and bitter gourd -Rs. 12.
