Principal posts in 5 government colleges vacant

PUDUCHERRY: Five government colleges in the Union Territory have been functioning without principals for a long time now.

The delay in filling the posts has not only caused administrative problems but also led to protests from various quarters.

The posts remain vacant at Bharathidasan Government College of Women, Tagore Arts College, Avvaiyar Government College for Women (Karaikal), S.R.K. Government Arts College (Yanam) and Mahatma Gandhi Government Arts College (Mahe). The posts have been vacant after the former principals retired months ago, official sources said.

“In one or two colleges, the principals retired almost a year ago. The delay in filling the posts has affected the institutions to a large extent,” official sources in the Education Department said.

Several persons were awaiting promotion for at least a year now. Measures to quicken the process were not initiated and academicians were upset about it, the sources added.

“The department has been appointing principals on ad-hoc basis. The persons appointed as principals fall in the selection grade lecturer category and do not receive any financial increase on being promoted.

They remain as selection grade lecturers in the post of principals on a pay-scale of Rs. 12,000-18,000, while those in Pondicherry University are on Rs. 16,000-24,000 pay-scale,” the sources said.

However, Education Minister M.O.H.F. Shahjahan assured that the posts of principals in all the five colleges would be filled immediately.

“All these are promotional posts. We have short listed the persons and the posts will be filled in seven to 10 days,” he said.
