Forum wants independent panel to probe blasts

Staff Reporter

KOZHIKODE: A special session of the national assembly of the Bangalore-based Popular Front of India (PFI), a conglomeration of various Muslim organisations in South India including the National Development Front (NDF) in the State, was held at Green Valley Auditorium in Manjeri on Friday.

The assembly adopted a resolution urging the Centre to institute an independent panel to probe the bomb blasts in different parts of the country, right from the Mumbai blasts of 1993. This independent panel should be made up of respected jurists, human rights activists, journalists and investigation experts, the resolution stated.

Another resolution deplored the disinformation campaign orchestrated by certain sections of the media against existing or imaginary Muslim organisations in the context of the recent bomb blasts. It called upon the media to desist from identifying individuals or organisations as culprits even before preliminary investigations were completed. It also appealed to the government to enact laws to strengthen the powers of the Press Council of India.

The assembly discussed the freedom parade to be organised by the front at four places — Mangalore in Karnataka, Madurai in Tamil Nadu and Manathavadi and Ernakulam in Kerala, on August 15.

Front chairman E. Abubacker presided.
