Part of Rs.110 crore project sanctioned by NDMC to improve street-lighting before C’wealth Games ‘Instead of using a 400 watt fitting, same result achieved with a 250 watt energy efficient fitting’ NEW DELHI: With the inauguration of 80 new streetlights on Simon Bolivar Marg here by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit this past week, the New Delhi Municipal Council’s pilot project started three months ago has paved the way for the civic body to move onto the second phase covering 67 roads. The pilot project was part of the Rs.110 crore project sanctioned by the NDMC in December 2007 for improvement of street-lighting in the NDMC area in view of the upcoming Commonwealth Games in 2010. According to the NDMC, the USP of the pilot project’s successful completion was the achievement of a degree of energy efficiency well beyond the prescribed norms set by the Delhi Government. Pioneering effortAn NDMC official said: “As part of this pilot project a total of 40 streetlight poles measuring 9 metres were put up across 1.2 km of Simon Bolivar Marg. With the completion of this project, the NDMC has become the pioneer having achieved over 45 lux of light on the roads surpassing the Delhi Government’s prescribed norm of 35 lux of light.” “Instead of normally using a 400 watt fitting we have achieved the same result with a 250 watt fitting using energy efficient fittings and better design created by our own electricity department,” he added. While the pilot project was implemented by Bajaj Electricals Limited, the tendering process for the second phase of 67 roads is in progress, a civic body official said. New streetlight polesThe civic body plans to replace about 12,000 new streetlight poles under the entire project in four phases. The length of these poles would vary between 9 metres to 12 metres depending on the width of the road. The NDMC official said: “We plan to replace all existing streetlights in the NDMC area by 2010 in four phases. We would be installing remote and GSM technology in the fourth phase covering colony roads and this technology would enable us to control the switching on and off of any streetlight through a centralised command.” “The idea behind the entire project is to revamp the existing streetlights which have long outlived their age and are in a bad condition. We plan to relocate the used streetlights in small colonies and parks,” he added.
