Exports of semi-finished, value-added items decline Coir rope export increases from two tonnes to 33 tonnes KOCHI: Export of coir and coir products from the country logged marginal gains during the first quarter of the current financial year with provisional figures from the Coir Board for April-June indicating about two per cent growth in value and eight per cent growth in volume. Total exports during the period was to the tune of 45,083 tonnes worth nearly Rs.130 crore against the 41,766 tonnes and Rs.127 crore during the same period last year. “We are on the right track this year despite the appreciation of the value of the Rupee,” Coir Board Chairman A.C. Jose said. One of the features of the performance for April-June is that export of semi-finished items like coir yarn showed significant decrease both in value and earnings. While coir mat exports showed an increase of five per cent in volume and seven per cent increase in earnings, other value-added items like coir mattings and coir rugs and carpets were seen falling. Coir mattings’ exports fell 37 per cent in quantity and 30 per cent in value and coir rugs and carpets showed a fall of 92 per cent in quantity and 93 per cent in earnings. Export of coir pith increased from 18,575 tonnes to 24,435 tonnes. In value terms, the increase was from Rs.14.61 crore to 17.65 crore. Export of rubberised coir increased from 184 tonnes to 307 tonnes. Value of the exports rose from Rs.1.47 crore to Rs.2.41 crore. Export of coir rope increased from two tonnes to 33 tonnes. Earnings increased from 1.24 lakh to 10.16 lakh. Export of coir mat increased from 15,137 to 15,956 tonnes.
