Punjab to get power supply from M.P.

Patiala: Punjab, which is grappling with power crisis, has got an assurance for supply of 24 lakh units of electricity per day from Madhya Pradesh to meet its electricity demand.

Punjab State Electricity Board (PSEB) had taken up the issue of power shortage with various States and managed to get an assurance of 24 lakhs unit of power from Madhya Pradesh starting Monday, board chairman Y.S. Ratra said.

Mr. Ratra said the board discussed the matter with Madhya Pradesh Power Trading Company Managing Director P.K. Vaish. Mr. Vaish promised to further increase the supplies as and when the situation in Madhya Pradesh improves, adding that PSEB has also taken up the matter with other States like Jammu and Kashmir, Sikkim and Tamil Nadu to increase supplies to Punjab, he said.

Mr. Ratra appealed to consumers to bear with such exigencies and hoped the situation would improve with normal rainfall in August so that consumers get relief from power cuts which were as long as eight hours in a day.

The Board, Mr. Ratra said, was forced to impose long hours of power cuts in July due to forced constraints such as scanty rainfall in the southern and western regions of the country and short supply of power from some States to Punjab.

He added that outages in central power projects such as those at Singrouli, Rihand and Unchahaar led PSEB to lose its share of power of about 30 lakh units per day.

The Bhakra Beas Management Board Hydro Power Rehabilitation Project is also not releasing full capacity of water from Pong Dam, thereby affecting power generation of around 20 lakh units from Mukerian Hydel Project, he said. --PTI
