KOCHI: The 1,300-odd health workers of the Kochi Corporation will soon be covered by a health insurance and medical support scheme. The essential tools for their work like masks, gloves and knee-high boots will also be provided by the Corporation. Annual health check-up, health insurance and subsidised medical treatment facilities at city hospitals are some of the highlights of the scheme that is being planned for the health workers. The scheme is being implemented as a component of the Municipal Solid Waste management scheme supported by the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM). The health scheme attains significance in the wake of reports of diseases like TB among the health workers. The instances of alcoholism among the workers, which is affecting their health, have also come to the notice of the civic authorities. The Corporation has been using the service of 800 permanent workers, 350 contingent workers and nearly 200 others including drivers for keeping the city clean and meeting the other health and sanitary parameters of the city life. The health scheme would be implemented before August 31. A meeting of the hospitals in the city will soon be convened to discuss the issue of medical treatment at subsidised rates. The selection of the insurance company will also be finalised. The Mission has earmarked Rs. 50 lakh for the awareness creation among general public.
