KOCHI: The primary scrutiny of the Expression of Interest (EoI) for the proposed Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) plant for Kochi will be held on Monday. The RDF plant is being projected as the answer to the continuing menace of non-degradable waste generated by the city including plastic waste. Scrutiny of proposalsThe Corporation has already received a few EoIs for the project. A committee consisting of the Kochi Mayor, Deputy Mayor, Corporation Secretary and Standing Committee chairpersons, will scrutinise the proposal. The civic body has also decided to send a delegation to an RDF plant functioning at Nagpur to obtain first-hand information about the machinery and functioning of the plant. The Kochi Corporation authorities have completed the civil work of the plant at its Brahmapuram site. At the RDF plant, the non-biodegradable waste would be converted into fuel pellets which are used by industrial units like cement factories and boilers. The Rs. 5.4 crore fund required for the plant comes from the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission. Presently, the civic body does not have a system for treating the plastic waste and other non-degradable refuses. While the plastic waste is bundled and stored at some divisions, the waste is being buried in some other places. Installed capacityThe proposed RDF plant of the Corporation will have an installed capacity to process 250 tonnes of non-degradable waste. It will also produce 225 lakh fuel pellets.
