Gopinath’s all-round show in vain

Karaikudi: Gopinath’s all round performance for Raja’s HSS, Sivagangai, went in vain as Muthiah Alagappa MHSS, Kottaiyur, won by one run in an exciting finish in the final of the Sivagangai District Boost Trophy inter-school cricket tournament at Karaikudi on Sunday.

The scores (Final): Muthiah Alagappa MHSS 100 in 19.2 overs (Kishore Kannan 30, Gopinath four for 14) bt Raja’s HSS 99 in 19.4 overs (Gopinath 51, Kishore Kannan three for 18).

Semifinals: Alagappa MHSS 109 in 20 overs (MS Abudhahir 47, Thangavel three for nine) lost to Raja’s HSS 110 for five in 18 overs (Murali three for nine); Muthiah Alagappa MHSS 130 for eight in 20 overs bt LFRC HSS 74 in 16.3 overs (Vinodh three for 14, Muthuselvam three for 15).

Essa’ scalps six

Abrar Essa’s six for 10 helped Mahatma Montessori MHSS defeat Government HSS, Vallalapatti, by 142 runs and enter the quarterfinals of the Madurai District Boost Trophy inter-school cricket tournament at Madurai on Sunday.

The scores (pre-quarterfinals): Mahatma Montessori MHSS 187 for five in 25 overs (Ateek Fazal 75) bt Govt. HSS, Vallalapatti, 45 in 9.4 overs (Abrar Essa six for 10); TVS Lakshmi School 222 for five in 25 overs (Prasanna Venkatesh 87, Surendran 46, Arun three for 59) bt Seventh Day Adventist MHSS 149 for nine in 25 overs (Geidon 39, Gokul three for 21); ACHSS 199 in 24 overs (Vignesh 34, Arun Prasath three for 20) bt Mangayarkarasi HSS 41 in 14 overs (Yuvaviyaush five for 11); SBOA MHSS 161 for two in 25 overs (Vaidyanathan 60, Gowthanan 47 not out, Yoganathan 32) bt Siddu MHSS (25 in 12.2 overs (VIgnesh three for 12, Gabriel three for 10).

Sathyabama wins

Sathyabama University, Chennai lifted the Doss-Remi Trophy defeating Sri Krishna Arts College, Coimbatore, 25-19, 22-25, 25-12, 21-25, 18-16 for its third win in the men’s semifinal round robin league of the 11th annual State-level inter-collegiate volleyball tournament at Sawyerpuram on Saturday. Sri Krishna Arts College finished runner-up losing only to Sathyabama University. Sethu Institute of Technology, Kariapatti, finished third defeating Saraswathy Thiagaraja College, Pollachi, 25-15, 25-19, 25-20.

In the women’s four-team super-league, St. Joseph’s EC, SRM University and Vaishnava College (all from Chennai) finished with two wins and a loss each and hence there was a three-way tie for the title. St. Joseph’s emerged winner on points to lift the Prof. C. Manickam memorial Trophy. SRM University was placed second and Vaishnava College third.

The results: St. Joseph’s EC bt PSGR College, Coimbatore 25-15, 25-10, 26-24; Vaishnava College bt SRM University 22-25, 25-21, 25-16.

Retains title

St. Xavier’s College, Palayamkottai, retained the title defeating N.M. Christian College, Manthandam, 3-2 in the final of the inter-collegiate table tennis tournament at Palayamkottai on Saturday.

The results:

Final: St. Xavier’s bt NM Christian College 3-2 (Daniel bt Rajesh 4-2; Tamil Vannan lost to Ratheesh 3-4; Arumugakani bt Robinson 4-1; Tamil Vannan lost to Rajesh 4-0; Daniel bt Ratheesh 4-0).
