RIMS lacks proper facilities

Infrastructure, facilities missing; classes were supposed to start on August 1

ADILABAD: The start of Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) at Adilabad this academic year can only be likened to a premature delivery, considering the incomplete infrastructure and other required facilities here.

Work on the mammoth building and renovation of the old headquarters hospital building is apace. Yet, it will be some more time before the complex has a semblance of a medical college in the government sector.

The present status of the college, however, has left the parents anxious about the future of their wards. “Leave alone proper teaching rooms and laboratories, where are the 40 girls going to stay?” said Pulla Bhaskar Rao from Warangal, father of Namrata, a student who opted for RIMS Adilabad.

When he accompanied his daughter to Adilabad for reporting, Mr. Bhaskar Rao was shocked to see the state of affairs. His impression that first year classes would start on August 1 was shattered when authorities said the date would be notified on August 4.

Many parents now want their children be given a chance to study in some other government college until the college is ready. Mr. Bhaskara Rao has approached the Director of Medical Education and AP Medical Council seeking their intervention for temporarily allowing Namrata to study in an established institution.

“These are just the birth pangs. We have already identified two buildings in town to be used as hostels especially for girls until our own building is ready in a few weeks. Laboratories will be ready by the time to attend practical classes. We have recruited the faculty too,” explained Dr. Sriram Rathod, the Principal.

“I was informed in the DME that the faculty members are reluctant to join,” counters Mr. Bhaskar Rao.
