Agartala: Workers of the ruling Communist Party of India (Marxist) paid homage to departed Communist leader Harkishan Singh Surjeet , taking out a silent procession through the main thoroughfares here on Sunday afternoon. Senior state CPI(M) leaders Bijan Dhar, Gautom Das, Khagen Das led the mourners with volunteers holding red flags at half-mast and displaying Surjeet’s photograph on their chests. The procession was taken out from the Rabindra Bhavan, the venue of the 19th state conference of the Tripura CPI(M) beginning on Monday. The venue has been named Harkishan Singh Surjeet Nagar and the conference has been postponed by a day. The open rally, earlier scheduled for Sunday, was cancelled in the wake of Surjeet’s demise. Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, who is also a Polit Bureau member, was away in Delhi to take part in the funeral. Mr. Sarkar is scheduled to arrive on Monday. CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat is scheduled to inaugurate the conference on Monday afternoon while state secretary Baidyanath Mazumdar will hoist the party flag in the morning. Polit Bureau member Sitaram Yechury will also address the conference.
