Family dramas are favourites

PREFERRED CHOICE: A scene from the serial ‘Asha’.

Popularity charts hold mirror to changing trends and what keeps the audience glued to the idiot box. The popular formula changes and the in vogue taste is reflected by what most of the channels are airing to stay afloat on the charts. If a cookery show on a channel strikes target with viewers, all the others commission the same albeit minor variations to call it different from the other. Same thing gets repeated once a talent hunt gets wide viewership. All others rush in s earch of producers to study the same and churn it out for them.

It is another thing that the so called original would have rooted its inspiration from something either on national networks or some other regional channel. If nothing, a clear lack of a desire to be innovative on part of producers and also the channels. Few, very few in fact, have come out with a certain nativity and original concepts but alas, it gets copied immediately.

However, one sure formula that proved to be consistently successful over the years happens to be family dramas with oodles of sentiments, lots of tears, and few smiles, agonies of relationships and unforeseen designs of providence.

‘Zee 24 Gantalu’

The Zee stable is all set to acquire one more channel. The much awaited news channel ‘Zee 24 Gantalu’ is getting ready to roll out in next couple of months. Shailesh Reddy, who headed news bureau of Zee News Hyderabad and Zee Telugu News, now will be heading ‘Zee 24 Gantalu’ as channel head. October is when the viewers are likely to get to catch up with a new news option. With Zee coming out with its decisions, all eyes are fixed on MAA which too has promised a news channel.
