P. Venkatachalam Panampally Nagar We have set up a committee to study the bus shelters existing now and will soon be cutting down on bus stops within one km and those near the junctions. Also a special drive is now on to implement lane discipline and also to enforce more discipline through spot fines. We on an average fine more than 8,000 cases per month in the area of traffic violations. From Edappally to the North overbridge, a dedicated track on the left should be demarcated for buses alone. Buses should strictly stay on this track and other vehicles on the right track. Further, the pathway on the l eft on the North Overbridge for two-wheelers and three-wheelers should be allotted for buses alone. If that side of the bridge is not strong enough to accommodate continuous bus flow, then flow of buses on the pathway could be regulated manually or with time-controlled devices. In general, inside the city, wherever there is adequate roadwidth, buses should be provided with dedicated tracks on the left side.Kamil Mohammed Aluva We had tried out this experiment of regulating buses to the small track on the bridge, but the experiment did not work due to the attitude of the bus drivers and also due to the weakness of the bridge and its narrowness. Autorickshaw stands should not be allowed in narrow junctions and overtaking should be strictly prohibited on bridges by all modes of vehicles, including two-wheelers. In busy wide junctions like Palarivattom, Vyttill a, Kundanoor right turn, straight and left turn lanes should be clearly demarcated to streamline traffic and violators should be warned and booked subsequently. Give traffic police sweeping powers, as in Mumbai and Hyderabad, to regulate and punish offenders on the spot. During peak hours, signals should be controlled manually to regulate heavy traffic areas. Signboards should be installed in major highways to warn motorists of accidents and related delays and alternate routes. All motorists should be educated about headlight usage and make it mandatory for all vehicles not to use high beams in city limits and impose hefty fines for violators.Jacob Thomas By email All the suggestions are very valid and would go a long way in improving the traffic system. Sweeping powers as in the Commissionerate system will give a more effective hand to the police in traffic enforcement. Also we are now in the process of putting up manual lights at all places for the automatic signal lights fail during peak times. The private buses of Kochi are over-crowded and go at high speed, often threatening the life of the public. The road transport authority has given permits for carrying around 50 persons for a bus. Kindly make necessar y steps to avoid overloading and overspeeding of private buses.M.P. Subramanian Chullickal We have launched a special drive to book such buses which are overtaking, overloading and driving in a rash manner and more than 100 buses have been booked in the past ten days. We will be continuing this drive. We inaugurated the digital speed punching centres for buses on July 25 and this will also control the overspeeding of buses to a great extent.
