‘N-pact will cost country 16 lakh crore’
Special Correspondent
HYDERABAD: A. Gopal Krishnan, former chairman of the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board, on Sunday spoke against the nuclear deal with the US, saying it would cost the country Rs.16 lakh cr. and raise the cost of power generation by ten per cent by 2020.
Addressing a seminar on ‘Nuclear deal-Hyde Act-Indian sovereignty’ organised by the Andhra Pradesh State Committee of All-India Lawyers’ Union here, he said the agreement would enable MNCs to set up N-plants. The country would be at the mercy of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for purchasing raw material, like uranium, from outside. Madabhushi Sridhar, professor of NALSAR University, explaining the constitutional impact of the nuclear agreement, criticised the Centre for enabling the executive to bypass Parliament in going ahead with the international treaty. This posed a threat to the country’s sovereignty.
K. Nageshwar, MLC, spoke and G. Vidyasagar, president of the committee, presided over the programme.
