Trinamool Congress stages rally in Singur

Special Correspondent

KOLKATA: The Trinamool Congress-led Krishi Jami Raksha (Protection of Farmland) Committee (KJRC) held a rally and took out a procession at Singur in West Bengal’s Hooghly district on Sunday threatening to prevent work at the Tata Motors’ automobile project if the land allegedly acquired without the consent of the peasants is not returned to their owners.

The district leadership of the Congress also organised roadblocks at various places in Hooghly district, demanding that the plots forcibly acquired from the peasants be handed back to them.

Elaborate security measures were taken at the project site to prevent any untoward incident. The demonstrations passed off peacefully.

Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee met with associates here to finalise plans to step up the agitation against the Singur project from where the first “Nano” cars are expected to roll out later this year.
