Census of micro and small industries

KOCHI: Ernakulam District Industries Centre will intensify enumeration activities this month to complete the fourth census of micro, small and medium industries at the instance of the Government of Kerala.

A shortage of enumerators had hampered the progress of the work, said an official of the Industries Department. The enumeration activities which began early this year is expected to be completed by September, according to the Industries Department.

The shortage of enumerators had resulted in just about 25 per cent of the work being completed so far. The Ernakulam District Industries Centre is expected to press into service more than a 100 enumerators as well as its field officers for the job.

It is learnt that work on the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) census across the State will be completed by the end of next months given the intensive efforts being made by the respective District Industries Centres.

Ernakualam, which has one of the largest number of enterprises in the State had around 37,000 registered MSME. As to what percentage of the registered units are functional will be determined by the ongoing census enumeration.

As per the directive from the State Industries Department, all MSM enterprises registered up to March 31, 2007 will come under the purview of the current census exercise. The notification also said that enterprises registered with the Khadi and Village Industries Board, the Village Industries Commission and the Coir Board will also be surveyed.

The notification also said that the first Pharmaceutical Census will also be conducted along with the current survey.
