Power cut for industrial units opposed

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: The National Confederation of Officers’ Association of Central Public Sector Undertakings (NCOA), Kerala Zone, has objected to the decision by the Kerala State Electricity Regulatory Commission to impose 25 per cent power cut on industrial units and the move by the Kerala State Electricity Board to impose two per cent thermal surcharge on electricity.

A statement from the NCOA said here that lack of strategic planning was the reason for the power shortage in the State. There was a “lack of proper policies and failure of KSEB in utilising available capacity by effective operation.”

Kerala has been led to this situation because KSEB depends on the monsoon rains alone in these times of climate change, said the statement. KSEB solely depends on hydro electric stations for power generation excepting the Brahmapuram plant.

Plea to panel

The Association appealed to Regulatory Commission to revoke the decision to impose power cut and to consider short and long-term measures to tackle the power crisis in the State.

On a short-term measure, the Association suggested imposition of power cut on domestic consumers and implementation of higher tariffs for high-end domestic consumers.

The NCOA also proposed introduction of longer periods of load shedding for this category as well as prevention of extravagant use of electricity in the commerce sector.

Efficient use of water resources, reforming the operations and maintenance practice and enhancement of power generation by proper mix of hydro, coal and atomic reactor-based units are among the long-term solutions suggested by NCOA.
