Andhra Pradesh
I have been witnessing this at the entrance of Sanathnagar industrial estate area/ Food Corporation road. At the neem tree on the corner of the Agarwal’s petrol station, there is a spur of activity that could be described as an encroachment. A few flags initially appeared some months go at the foot of the tree. Later on, some loose Shahbad stones were kept with mud pots supposedly for quenching thirst of the pedestrians. Some loose bricks enclosed the tree and the mud pots. A few weeks ago, the bricks were plastered, the Shahbad stones fixed in cement and some plants too came up. The water pots have moved out to the narrow corner area left for the footpath. More flags are fluttering now. All this activity is going on in a busy street crossing where there is traffic police on duty. This activity will slowly get the status of a permanent religious fixture, preventing any further road improvement. M. Sarangapani, Ufoam, Sanathnagar Taking law into their handsThe MIM MLA is named in a slew of cases, including the alleged assault of a Bangladesh poet. The right course is not to allow such people to take law into their hands, to any more hold any office of profit under the government even as MLA claiming to be the people’s representative (The Hindu- July 27). Why not amend the laws to bar such people to be in Legislature and denying them even voting rights and their pension? This must be made applicable even at the panchayat level as such people are unfit to be in the Legislature. Ch V. Rama Rao, Khairatabad
