RTC to introduce another AC bus

Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: The Greater Hyderabad Zone of APSRTC is planning to introduce one more air-conditioned bus on city roads in addition to the existing AC bus being operated between Secunderabad and Hi Tec City. After going through a host of possible routes, authorities have zeroed-in on the Dilsukhnagar – Hi Tec city route for operating the new AC bus and it would be on the roads in a fortnight, said RTC secretary A. Nageswara Rao.

The first AC bus was introduced on a trial basis in April this year with a minimum fare of Rs. 10 from Secunderabad station to Hi Tec City covering a distance of 18 km. The fare was later revised to Rs. 10 for the first five stages on the route to a maximum of Rs. 22 till the last stage.

Interestingly, the only AC bus being operated does not show encouraging signs as Earnings Per Kilometre (EPK) generated are not up to the expected levels.

“Normally, the EPK for an AC bus on city roads should be around Rs. 26 but the present bus is fetching us EPK of about Rs. 22,” said a senior RTC official. From poor operational frequency to less occupancy ratio, there could be many reasons for low EPK of the AC bus.
