dated August 5, 1958: Trip around moon

A giant three-stage rocket will blast off from its launching pad in Cape Canaveral on the first trip around the moon in about two weeks’ time, according to unofficial sources in Cape Canaveral and in Washington. The sources said the attempt would be made between August 15 and 19 when the moon approaches to within about 220,000 miles from the earth. The first lunar probe would be a reconnaissance by the nose-cone of the rocket jammed with instruments and television-type cameras to beam back to the earth the first close-ups of the moon’s surface and the first pictures of the other side of the moon.
