Autorickshaw rally flagged off

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: Norwegian Mats Fevolden wore his Viking helmet, took his sword and shield and jumped into ‘The Lost Vikings,’ one of the 18 colourful autorickshaws that accelerated their way towards roads meandering through one of the most rugged terrains in India.

Mr. Fevolden said that ‘The Lost Vikings’ were here not to plunder but to steal the hearts of people in India.

“You get to meet a lot of people in India. Indians are friendly and it is fun to be here. It is also challenging as the traffic in India is frightening,” said Mr.Fevolden.

Teams from 10 countries — India, New Zealand, Australia, Canada, Germany, Norway, Hungary, Spain, U.K., and the U.S. — are participating in the 2000-km ‘CEAT Mumbai express rally’ with tough climatic and road conditions of the Western Ghats. The participants include seven women.

“The rally will pass through Vellore, Bangalore, Hassan, Mangalore, Bhatkal, Panaji, Tarkali, Malvan, Ratnagiri, Mahad, and Alibagh before reaching Mumbai on August 14,” said Vishal Pawar, Senior Product Manager of CEAT, after flagging off the rally.

The highlight of the rally is the ‘Adopt a Village program,’ which involves funding of educational development initiatives in villages visited by the teams.
