Letters to the Editor
Your editorial “Liberty on two wheels” (August 2) highlighted how unscientifically infrastructure development is being carried out in India. In the West, pedestrians and cyclists are given priority. Automobile drivers have to respect them. In India, on the other hand, the poor cyclist has to zigzag his way through the roads. Footpaths, if they exist, are crowded with hawkers, and broken slabs abound. The life of pedestrians and the masses on two-wheelers has become stressful. Come rain, their woes get compounded. We need to design and create proper infrastructure and educate drivers and pedestrians before advocating “bicycling.” Aravindan Kuttalam, Chennai
