COLOMBO: As the LTTE “unilateral declaration of ceasefire” for the duration of the SAARC Summit ended, the Sri Lanka’s military on Monday claimed at least 46 LTTE cadre were killed in the north of the country. A day before the summit commenced on August 2, the military charged the LTTE of violating its own ceasefire call by indulging in “unprovoked” firing at troops in the Muhamalai sector in Jaffna. The military and police in Colombo and other parts of the country are geared up now to meet any contingency after the ceasefire’s expiry. “We did not let our vigil down during the SAARC Summit. The forces are prepared to meet any threat posed by the Tigers”, said a senior government official. A Defence Ministry statement said in the north, 46 LTTE cadre and nine soldiers were killed, and 18 injured.
