TIRUPATI: A team of experts from the University Grants Commission (UGC) paid a visit to Sri Venkateswara University here on Monday to estimate its financial requirements for the ensuing 11th Five-Year Plan. University of Calcutta Vice-Chancellor Suranjan Das, who headed the team as its chairperson, closeted in a meeting with the SVU Vice-Chancellor Choppala Ratnam, along with UGC Joint Secretary Renu Batra (member-secretary of the committee) and other panel members. In a PowerPoint presentation, Prof. Ratnam explained the developmental activities taken up during the tenth five-year plan and the expenditure incurred in the process, besides the estimates for the works proposed to be taken up in the near future and the financial implications involved. He explained his plan to focus more on opening centres to study issues pertaining to women’s empowerment and the uplift of downtrodden masses. The Vice-Chancellor laid special emphasis on nanotechnology, which he said was emerging as a major area in the realm of science and technology, and sought to take steps to focus extensively on this area in terms of academic and research activities. He also stressed the need to build additional hostel blocks to accommodate more students.
