Warship rescues merchant vessel

New Delhi: A merchant vessel in distress in high seas was rescued by a Navy warship in the Bay of Bengal and towed to safety to Port Blair.

Responding to a request for help from m.v. Nazish on July 29, the Navy’s frontline destroyer, INS Rana, rescued the merchant vessel even as it was drifting towards Myanmar owing to failure of its propulsion system, aided by strong winds.

“The engines had a technical problem due to which the propulsion system failed completely. After three days of towing, the merchant vessel was brought to Port Blair on August 2,” sources said.
