VISAKHAPATNAM: The State Government has extended the jurisdiction of the Visakhapatnam Urban Development Authority (VUDA) over the municipalities of Amudalavalasa and Srikakulam in Srikakulam district and Tuni in East Godavari district. Constituted in 1978, VUDA hitherto covered the areas of Visakhapatnam, Gajuwaka, Bheemunipatnam, Anakapalle and Vizianagaram municipalities and 287 villages with an extent of 1,721 sq. km. But, after extending its jurisdiction now, an additional area of 3,852.51 sq. km. would be included in the Visakhapatnam Metropolitan Region (VMR), taking the total number of villages covered to 931 and the new VMR area to 5,573.51 sq. km. Announcing this at a media conference here on Monday, District Collector and Chairman of VUDA Sanjay Kumar said Nagar Panchayat of Rajam in Srikakulam district was also brought under them. GOMs. No. 525 was issued to this effect by the Municipal Administration and Urban Development Department on July 30, modifying the master plan of VMR. VUDA Vice-Chairman V.R. Vishnu said the thrust factors leading to extension of VUDA limits were the Achutapuram Special Economic Zone adjoining the Visakhapatnam mandal and in addition to it, the emerging of several Special Economic Zones in Nakkapalli, S. Rayavaram and Rambilli mandals, the Visakhapatnam-Kakinada Petroleum, Chemical and Petro Chemical Investment Regional Special Development Authority (VK PCPIR SDA), and the rapid urbanisation in the south, north and western corridors of VMR. Foreign investmentThe PCPIR region is located between Visakhapatnam and Kakinada in the south for exclusive hubs of chemical and petro-chemical activities attracting large-scale foreign investment while in view of rapid urbanisation and future developments in the south, north and western corridors of VMR, there was an immediate need to include the list of new areas in VUDA jurisdiction, he explained. Mr. Vishnu said VUDA was taking up preparation of comprehensive master plans and zonal development plans for the extended area by engaging services of consultants, creation of regional units at Anakapalle, Vizianagaram, Srikakulam and other places, and posting of technical and non-technical officials on deputation or outsourcing.
