Valuable guide: Law Minister M. Vijayakumar releasing the Kerala University Directory by presenting a copy to Vishnugopal, a student, at a function in Thiruvananthapuram on Tuesday.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: As part of its ‘Suvarna Keralam’ programme the University of Kerala has published a ‘Directory of Institutions’ listing all the colleges, departments and centres that come under it.

The 288-page directory was compiled with funds generated from students, teachers and staff of the University. The directory begins with a history of the University—its transition from the University of Travancore to the University of Kerala—and goes on to detail the faculties, departments, colleges, and research centres that it has now.

The descriptive part of the directory captures all essential data about one department / college / centre, in one page.

The photograph of the institution, the name of the head of the institution, the land area that the institution occupies, the courses offered, areas of research, library facilities, number of staff (teaching and non-teaching) and the publications of the institutions find mention in the page. This is followed by a brief write-up about the institution’s history and noteworthy developments.

Women’s college

For instance the page devoted to the Government College for Women, Thiruvananthapuram informs the reader that the college started its life as the ‘Sircar Girls School’ in 1864. It was elevated to a ‘first grade college’ in 1920 and was affiliated to the University of Madras till 1937 when the University of Travancore was founded.

The first principal of the college was Sarah Blunt, the directory notes.

Similar descriptions have also been provided in the case of self-financing institutions affiliated to the University. The institutions have been grouped into teaching departments, centres of study, libraries, UITs, University colleges of teacher education, arts and science colleges, colleges of fine arts, music, physical education and law, colleges of teacher education, engineering college, MBA colleges and MCA colleges, medical, ayurveda, homoeo, dental and siddha colleges and colleges of nursing, pharmacy, physiotherapy and hotel management.

The directory was released at the University Senate Chamber by Law Minister M. Vijayakumar on Tuesday. In his presidential address at the ceremony the University Vice-Chancellor M.K. Ramachandran Nair said the money that was left over from the fund created for the directory would be used for beautification of the main campus of the varsity at Palayam. In about a week the directory will be available for sale at the publications wing of the University.
