The Magic touch: Participants at the State-level make-up competition held in Bangalore on Tuesday.

Bangalore: The setting, Puttana Chetty Town Hall, was not perfect for a convention of the beauty parlours’ association.

Over 300 people, mostly women, were seen taking notes frantically. But with beauticians fulfilling increasingly important social roles, no wonder that “Unique 2008”, organised by Akhila Karnataka Beauty Parlours’ Association here on Tuesday, appeared to be the forum for anyone who wanted to know more about beauty and what lies behind it.

The programme included another attraction for nearly 50 people, who had registered for the State-level make-up and hairstyling competition held on the occasion.

“Unique 2008” began with seminars at 9 a.m. on various subjects concerning beauticians, as technology finds newer ways to enter our lives. With a demonstration on cosmetology equipment, M.K. Shenoy, microbiologist and pharmacologist, highlighted basics about skin and hair and spoke about the latest technology in hair reduction, hair re-growth, acne treatment and tan removal.

Inputs

Gunashekar Vuppalapati, cosmetology expert and plastic surgeon, also gave some important inputs.

The chief guest was the president of the Karnataka State Women’s Commission, Parmila Nesargi. Nagaraj, Muchi Ramakrishna, Raghu, Zarina and Ashalatha, make-up artists, were the judges of the competitions held.

Uma Bai and Sajitha won the first prizes in the hair and make-up competitions.

This unusual package cost the participants all of Rs. 400, inclusive of their models, if they had brought any.

“This gives beauticians a chance to interact with experts, and encourages sharing of knowledge and talent,” said Harini Simha, general secretary of the Akhila Karnataka Beauty Parlours’ Association.

“We have people from all over the State participating in the convention this time,” said Ms. Simha.
