Learning beyond the classroom

Unique quiz show gives children in the Capital an opportunity to showcase their talents

To encourage learning beyond the classroom, a unique quiz is being organised in the Capital to give children an opportunity to showcase their talents.

The Delhi edition of the two-day “Horlicks Wizkids-2008” opens at Siri Fort Auditorium in the Capital this Wednesday. While music melody, face painting and fusion dance will be part of the contest on Day One, the second and last day will s ee “Laughter Champions” finals, fancy dress competition, Hindi “Antakshari” finals and “Delhi Wiz Team” (finals).

Two city finalists -- one senior and another junior -- will be selected from 19 Indian cities. While the contest has already come to a close in Bangalore, Chennai, Mumbai, Kolkata and Patna, it is yet to start in Bhopal, Hyderabad, Cuttack, Varanasi and Nagpur. The inter-school contest from Classes VI to XI is expected to see the participation of more than 175,000 students from across 19 Indian cities.

The contest will also be held in Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Nepal between July and September. Later, 44 winners will take part in the national finals in Bangalore in November and undergo a weeklong training programme.

The winners will get an opportunity to visit Britain to present the Charter of Social Responsibility, a project undertaken by the contestants.

To mark the completion of five years of the event, the organisers of the fifth edition have announced “Badlo Apne Bachpan Ka Size” initiative (For a bigger, better childhood) to empower students to become self-reliant. The young adults will be disseminated lectures and shown an audio-visual presentation so that they can become aware and educated about child rights.

Instead of the two city finalists from each city, a third finalist will also be chosen on the basis of the project on child rights.
