Wages for job scheme workers paid through banks

KARAIKAL: Karaikal district in the Union Territory of Puducherry is the first in the country to disburse wages through banks to the casual workers engaged under the National Rural Employment Guarantee (NREG) scheme, said N.Vasanthakumar, Collector, here on Monday.
The Collector told The Hindu that under the NREG scheme, poor agricultural workers, farmers were given employment for a period of 100 days a year during the lean season for doing several development works.
He said that the district administration asked the workers to open savings bank account with the commercial a bank. The wages of all workers had been credited into their account, the Collector said.
