Creative: Debrup Chatterjee with his works of art in Chitradurga. Chitradurga: Unlike other people who use soap either for bathing or washing clothes, 23-year-old Debrup Chatterjee uses them to carve out idols and various other objects. Mr. Chatterjee, who is from Kolkata, is a student of dentistry at SJM Dental College here, in his third year. He said it was about a year ago that he discovered this ability, while playing with a cake of wax. “Being a student of dentistry, I use small cakes of wax to create models of teeth. One day, sitting alone at home, I carved an idol of Lord Ganesha with dental instruments on a small cake of wax. It turned out to be better than what I had expected. Since then I have carved more such idols,” he said. After initially using cakes of wax, which are relatively small and used only by students of dentistry, he wanted to create bigger objects. “I found that soaps were the ideal material to use,” he said. Despite his busy schedule, Mr. Chatterjee finds time for his new-found hobby. Among his creations, a few attractive ones include an idol of Lord Vishnu lying on a serpent, an idol of the goddess Saraswati on a swan, a two-faced Ganesha and a cave temple of the deity.
