Kakinada: The southwest monsoon triggered heavy rains in the district in the last 24 hours. Normal life was hit but the rain came as a boon for farmers. The Konaseema area received copious rain and more rains were forecast in the coming days. The Godavari received large inflows due to the rain in its catchment areas. The water level at Dowleswaram barrage stood at 7.5 metres on Tuesday afternoon as against the first danger mark of 11.75 metres. The river continued to be in spate at many places. The highest amount of rainfall (11.96 cm) was recorded in Pamarru mandal while the lowest rainfall of 0.74 cm was recorded in Gandepalli. The average rainfall for 60 mandals was 5.301 cm and total 318.05 cm, District Revenue Officer M. Mohan Raju said. The chief amounts of rainfall (in centimetres) received at various places were as follows: Mummidivaram (11.76), Tuni (10.47), Amalapuram (11.54), I. Polavaram (10.02), Ainavilli (10.64), Kothapeta (10.92) and Ramachandrapuram (11.04). Barring the death of four persons in Monday’s wall collapse near Tuni, there were no untoward incidents. There was some let up in the rain since Tuesday morning. District officials concerned were asked to keep a watch on the situation.
