BERHAMPUR: Members of the Ganjam unit of the All Orissa Class IV Employees’ Union demonstrated in front of the office of the Revenue Divisional Commissioner (RDC), southern division, on Tuesday demanding compensation for their demolished union office. According to the president of the union, Rajendra Sahu, the union office and the store house of their cooperative in the city had to be demolished for construction of the Lanjipalli overbridge. The Berhampur tehisldar in 2003 promised to compensate the union with another building for their use in Kamapalli or Courtpeta area of the city. Later the then RDC had also promised to hand over an unused government quarters for their use. The RDC had also written to the Ganjam district Collector and Berhampur tehsildar to do the needful so that the union could get a building which could also enable its cooperative to function. But the promise is yet to be fulfilled. The other demands of the agitators included provision of free dress, extension of retirement age of Class IV employees to 65 years, scope of promotion for educated class IV employees, employment to next kin of the employees who die while in service. They also held a public meeting near the Berhampur court in the evening.
