UP IN ARMS: Women activists of Orissa Asha Karmi Association under the banner of CITU demonstrating before the Secretariat in support of their demands on Tuesday. BHUBANESWAR: Hundreds of Asha karmis staged a demonstration here on Tuesday demanding status of a State government employees and courted arrest. Under the banner of Orissa Asha karmis Association (OAKA), these workers raised slogans demanding regularisation of service under National Rural Health Mission (NRHM). A delegation of OAKA met Nina Singh, NRHM manager, who assured them of providing identity card, Asha kit, Rs. 600 cash and provision of restrooms on hospital campuses. Earlier, OAKA members took out a rally from Bhubaneswar Railway Station and assembled at PMG Square. Addressing the rally, CITU general secretary Bishnu Mohanty threatened to intensify the agitation if the State government did not pay heed to demands of Asha karmis. Among others Susama Behera, Minati Mishra, Kabita Das and Arnapurna Majhi participated in the demonstration. At least one Asha karmi has been appointed for 1,000 population to assist health workers and officials in better delivery of health services in rural areas. They promote family planning, assist pregnant women for institutional delivery under the Janani Surakshya Yojna for reduction of maternal and infant mortality rate.
