MALAPPURAM: A three-day national workshop on ‘Emerging concerns in English curricula’ got to a start at Calicut University, Tenhipalam, on Tuesday. P. Bhaskaran Nair, Professor of Communication and English Literature at the University of Lincoln, Brayford Pool, U.K., inaugurated the workshop organiSed by the Department of English, Calicut University. Prof. Nair underscored the necessity of acquiring English language as a communication tool in the era of globalisation. He called upon the students of English not only to learn but also to make others understand the importance of English as a world language. N. Ramachandran Nair, former Professor of English at the Calicut University, dealt with two separate sessions on ‘European fiction in translation’ and ‘Canadian literature.’ Saji Mathew spoke on ‘Indian writing in English.’ B. Sreedevi, Head of the Department of English, Calicut University, welcomed the gathering. T.M.A. Jaleel, former head of the Department of English, proposed a vote of thanks. The workshop, attended by students and teachers of English language and literature from various colleges under Calicut University, re-emphasised that the conventional notion of English courses both at graduate and postgraduate level had changed radically. With new writings and translations in English coming to the fore, literature of the marginalised is getting prominence.
