NEW RESPONSIBILITY: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi and Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin handing over the mayoral sceptre to the first Mayor of Tuticorin R.Kasturi Thangam in Tuticorin on Tuesday. Social Welfare Minister P. Geetha Jeevan is in the picture. Tuticorin: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Tuesday inaugurated the Tuticorin Corporation and laid the foundation stone for 24 development projects to be executed at a cost of Rs.67.42 crore. He said the government would provide a grant of Rs.5 crore for implementing 10 projects proposed by the civic body with an outlay of Rs.16.49 crore. Major works planned included improvement of water supply, construction of building for the Corporation office, beautification of 16 ‘notified parks’, desilting of the Buckle Canal and modernisation of two bus stands. Improving water supplyMinister for Rural Development and Local Administration M. K. Stalin said that the government would shortly prepare a detailed project report to improve water supply in the newly formed Corporation, taking into consideration the demands projected for the next 30 years. The demand after 30 years has been computed at 92 million litres per day to cater for a population of 6.87 lakh. At present, the civic body has the capacity to supply 32 million litres per day to 4.5 lakh people. Earlier, Mr. Karunanidhi inaugurated the memorial pillar marking the upgradation of Tuticorin into a Corporation. He handed over the Mayor’s ceremonial attire and sceptre to Municipal Chairperson R. Kasturi Thangam, who took charge as the first mayor of the Corporation. He also inaugurated seven infrastructure projects executed at an outlay of Rs.16.77 crore. Welfare distributedThe Chief Minister distributed assistance to the tune of Rs.10.56 crore to 34,444 beneficiaries under government-sponsored schemes. Ministers P. Geetha Jeevan, Arcot Veerasamy, Thangam Thennarasu, Durai Murugan, K. Ponmudy, Suresh Rajan, K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran, T.P.M Moideen Khan and Tamilarasi, and senior government officialswere present.
