Birur observed bandh as a mark of respect to him

‘State has lost a statesman who fought for farmers’

CHIKMAGALUR: The last rites of D.C. Srikantappa, MP, who died on Monday, were conducted in the family burial plot on the outskirts of Birur on Tuesday with full State honours.

Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa, Home Minister V.S. Acharya, MP H.N. Ananth Kumar, BJP State unit president and MP D.V. Sadananda Gowda, party’s chief whip D.N. Jeevaraj, MP Siddesh and MLAs C.T. Ravi, D.S. Suresh and K.M. Krishnamurthy were among those who paid their last respects to the departed leader.

The body of Mr. Srikantappa was taken in a procession from his residence to the burial ground. Birur observed a bandh as a mark of respect.

Educational institutions and commercial establishments, including banks, downed their shutters. Mr. Yeddyurappa told presspersons at the helipad that the State had lost an elderly statesman who championed the cause of farmers within and outside Parliament.

Verdict welcomed

Mr. Sadananda Gowda told presspersons that the decision by a Division Bench of the Karnataka High Court with regard to the Datta Peeta issue was in line with the wishes of the people. Pointing out that this order would help restore practices that were observed at the pilgrimage centre before 1975, he said it was the responsibility of every Government to treat all religions equally.

Reiterating that his Government was committed to the overall development of the State, he said the importance would be given to general issues. He said the decision by the Janata Dal (Secular) to support the Congress for the Legislative Council Chairman’s post after opposing the party in the Lok Sabha has exposed its opportunistic political policies.

Mr. Jeevaraj said Rs. 35 crore had been allotted in the budget for development of roads in the district and Rs. 25 crore for other development works.
