NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Tuesday granted interim bail to a French national for treatment of advanced stage AIDS at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital here. Julian Kanoui is facing prosecution under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act. AIDS treatmentThe Court last month had directed the Tihar Central Jail authorities to contact the hospital authorities for his treatment. Justice Anil Kumar granted bail to the accused on his furnishing a bail bond of Rs.1 lakh with one surety of like amount.The Court also took an undertaking from the French Embassy here to the effect that it would not make any travel documents available to the accused for leaving India without permission from the Court. It directed the accused to deposit his passport with the trial court and take leave from it before leaving India. The Court granted bail on submission of a medical report by one of the doctors treating the patient at RML Hospital. The report said the disease was in an advanced stage. The Narcotic Control Bureau had arrested him along with two of his accomplices following recovery of 1,210 kg of hashish from a godown at Narela in North-West Delhi 2007. The other accused in the case are Sarvesh Bhatia, Rakesh Kumar and Gautam Ghiwala. Sarvesh Bhatia and Rakesh Kumar are in judicial custody while Gautam Ghiwala is absconding.
