THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Finance Minister T.M. Thomas Isaac has said the United Democratic Front (UDF) was playing a political drama by organising a hartal in Wayanad district alleging that the State government was neglecting the proposals of the Kerala State Farmers’ Debt Relief Commission. At a press conference here on Tuesday, Dr. Isaac asked how the UDF had suddenly “contracted this love for farmers.” He wanted the UDF to tell the people how many farmers in the district had received the benefits of the Union government’s Agriculture Debt Waiver and Debt Relief Scheme. Under the schemes of the Union and the State government, the money meant for debt waiver and debt relief would go only to the banks and not to the farmers. The State government had written off debts up to Rs. 25,000 incurred by the Wayanad farmers. However, a section of the farmers identified for the benefits of the State scheme was eligible to receive assistance under the Central scheme. The State, therefore, had to wait till the formalities under the Central scheme were completed.
