KOZHIKODE: Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee president Ramesh Chennithala has downplayed the possibility of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) being given berth in the United Democratic Front (UDF). Mr. Chennithala told newspersons here on Tuesday that it was not warranted by the prevailing political situation and that it was not on the agenda of the front either. [NCP State president K. Muraleedharan had indicated the readiness of his party to join the Congress-led UDF.] Mr. Chennithala said the UDF was no place for political parties that had been turned away by the Communist Party of India (Marxist)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF), referring to the recent political developments at the national level in which the NCP had won the CPI(M)’s displeasure by supporting the Indo-U.S. nuclear agreement and backing the confidence motion moved by the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government in the Lok Sabha. No pressureMr. Chennithala said there was no pressure on the UDF to accommodate all allies of the Congress in the UPA government. Political alliances in States could be different from those at the national level. State-level alliances are decided by regional considerations, he said. In some places the NCP and the Bharatiya Janata Party are allies. No instructions have been received from the top leadership to admit the NCP to the UDF, the KPCC president said.
