TRS wants mining varsity in Telangana

HYDERABAD: The Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) has strongly opposed any move to establish the proposed mining university in Visakhapatnam.

It has taken exception to the move to set up the university in Andhra region, when Telangana was endowed with vast coal reserves.

The Centre had recently sanctioned two national mining universities, one in Madhya Pradesh and other Andhra Pradesh.

In the wake of the move by the State government to set up the proposed varsity in the Port City, TRS legislator E. Rajender, at a press conference here on Tuesday, said Telangana region was the right place for establishment of the university.

The 120-year-old Singareni Collieries Company Limited employed more than 1.15 lakh people till a few years. Though the manpower had come down to 75,000, the coal reserves extended from Bellampalli in Adilabad district to Manuguru in Khammam district, he added.

Godavarikhani in Karimnagar was the right choice for the proposed mining university, he said and questioned the rationale behind selecting Visakhapatnam for the proposed national varsity.
