Tamil Nadu politics

This refers to the report “Why the delay in filing response, court asks Karunanidhi, others” (Aug. 5). Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi proposed to undertake a fast to get the Sethusamudram project, which is good for not only the State but also the country, expedited. He even risked a charge of contempt of court for the sake of a development project. Supreme Court judge B.N Agrawal’s comments while seeking an explanation from the government on the delay in filing a response to the contempt notice issued in October were very strong. As the custodian of law, it is perhaps the court’s duty to pass such comments. But it pains me when I compare the number of contempt cases, particularly with respect to water disputes, that have been filed in the past. They were more serious than the Tamil Nadu instance as they pertained to violation of agreements and waste of public money on committees. Has the Supreme Court come down heavily on governments in those cases too?

The Tamil Nadu government, it appears, has made Chief Secretary L.K. Tripathy and two government advocates in New Delhi the scapegoats for the mistake committed by it in the contempt case. The Supreme Court’s order reinforces the common man’s faith in the judiciary.
