Women’s bill: panel seeks more time

NEW DELHI: The Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Personnel, Law and Justice departments, which is considering the 33 per cent women’s reservation Bill, has requested the Rajya Sabha Chairman to provide two more months to review the Bill.

Various proposals being considered

Originally the Committee was asked to submit its report by August 7. Since the Committee is considering various proposals put forth by the members of different parties and consensus was eluding in finalising the report, the extension of time was sought said Committee Chairman E.M. Sudarsana Natchiappan. A letter to this effect has already been sent to Vice President and Upper House Chairman Mohammed Hamid Ansari, he said.

Talking to The Hindu, he said since some parties insisted that reservation for the OBCs and the minorities should be included in the Bill, he had proposed an amendment to the Bill.

The amendment will read as: “nothing in this part shall prevent the Parliament from making any additional provision for reservation of seats in Parliament and State legislatures in favour of backward class citizens on the basis of resolutions of the State legislatures in this regard.”

The proposed amendment has been circulated to all the 30 members of the committee and they had been asked to get their party’s view at the earliest.
