FOR A CAUSE: Collector Reeta Harish Thakkar having a word with students who took out a procession on ‘World Population Day’ in Pudukottai on Tuesday. PUDUKOTTAI: Speakers at the ‘World Population Day’ organised by the Health Department here on Tuesday underlined the need for sensitising the masses to gender equality without any bias with a thrust on guaranteeing and safeguarding women’s rights. They also spoke on the importance for stepping up the sex ratio in the country. The Joint Director of Health (in-charge) S. Rajaraman said that there was a fall in the death rate thanks to advanced medical treatment, the sex ratio was on the decline. The Project Officer, Mahalir Thittam, M. Rajmohan, said that women’s rights should be safeguarded for stabilising sex ratio. The president of District Panchayat, C. Muthusamy, expressed a concern over declining sex ratio, indicating the urgent need for an immediate socio-economic uplift of women. The Project Officer, Integrated Child Development Scheme, Mangayarkarasi, said that women were the direct victims of gender bias. Not many parents attached much significance to nutritional diet for their girl children. The Deputy Director of Health, V. Ramamoorthy, said that the sex-ratio in the state was less than in adjoining states particularly Kerala. Empowerment of women through education would help bring about the desired results. The Mass Communication and Information Officer A. Petchiammal and the MLA R. M. Subburam spoke on the significance of the celebrations. Earlier, the District Collector Reeta Harish Thakkar flagged off an awareness rally in which students from various educational institutions participated. They marched down from the Public Office to the Town Hall through the thoroughfares in the town. The Pudukottai Municipal Chairperson Ramathilagam Udaiyappan was among those who were present.
