The district started implementing NREGS from

August 2

CHAMARAJANAGAR: The Chamarajanagar district administration started implementing the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) from August 2. Works under the scheme have been taken up in Moodnakode village of Maleyur Gram Panchayat in Chamarajanagar taluk.

The Chamarajanagar Zilla Panchayat has finalised works worth Rs. 98.36 crore to be taken up under the NREGS during 2008-09. The Union Government has approved a proposal for works worth Rs. 41.4 crore.

A senior official of the zilla panchayat told The Hindu that over 79,000 people had registered under the scheme in the district. Both the Union and State governments have released funds for taking up the works.

The scheme guarantees 100 days of employment every financial year to every household whose adult members would volunteer to do skilled manual labour, the official said and added that the workers would get a minimum wage of Rs. 84 a day.

Implementation of the scheme is likely to prevent migration of agricultural workers to coffee and tea estates in the neighbouring States of Tamil Nadu and Kerala in search of work.

The scheme was supposed to be implemented in the district from April 1. However, it was postponed because the model code of conduct for Assembly elections was in force.

Identified

Nearly 1.86 lakh families of daily wage workers have been identified in the district. Of them, 1.26 lakh families come under the below poverty line (BPL) category, the official said.

Job cards

A total of 17,709 works had identified through gram sabhas. Job cards were being distributed for those registered under the scheme, the official added.
