THENI: Bursting of safety cracker, which was used by railway officials to to stop trains in case of emergency, at Kuchanur, near Chinnamanur, caused panic and tension on Tuesday evening. Postman Narasimhan, saw three boxes of safety crackers, in the size of a shoe polish box inside a post box while clearing parcels from it at Kuchanur. When he attempted to open one of the boxes, it burst with a bang and thick smoke billowed from it. In a fit of fear, he brought two other boxes to Chinnamanur Post Office and lodged a complaint with the police. The bomb detection and disposal squad checked the explosive materials and confirmed that it would not harm people. Railway officials too confirmed that these crackers were used only to stop trains. Meanwhile, Railway Mail Service officials in Dindigul railway station were already instructed not to open any parcel bag in absence of police. The postal parcel van from Chinnamanur was stopped outside Dindigul station. The BDDS squad scanned the parcel bag from Chinnamanur and they took the bag safely to the RMS office. In the presence of police, all parcels in the bag were opened and checked carefully. But they did not find any explosive material in the parcels. Later, talking to press persons Additional Superintendent of Police Rangarajan said that each gate keeper was given a box comprising 10 crackers. Gate keeper kept a cracker on the track. When a train ran over it, it burst and spread smoke. Such crackers were used to alert to stop trains in case of emergency or any damage on the track, he added. Theni railway level crossing gatekeeper already lodged a complaint with the police about missing a box of 10 crackers. The police were alerted to detected seven crackers.
