Student protesters caned in Patna
Special Correspondent
PATNA: The police on Tuesday resorted to a lathi charge to disperse students who were protesting, in front of Bihar Education Minister Hari Narain Singh’s residence here, against “government inaction” to end a strike by non-teaching university staff.
Over a dozen students were injured and two dozen others arrested. Two students have been admitted to the Patna Medical College Hospital with serious injuries.
Earlier, the students gheraoed Mr. Singh and demanded his resignation, and shouted slogans against Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.
The strike by the non-teaching staff has brought to a halt issuance of marksheets and certificates, putting to difficulty students who are seeking admission to institutions outside Bihar. It has stalled the admission process in colleges here, besides hampering the teaching process for well over six weeks now.
The striking staff have accused the Chief Minister of going back on his election promise of conceding their demands which included promotions and removal of pay anomalies.
