60 bags of ration rice seized

Ration rice in 60 bags, meant for public distribution, was seized from a private goods vehicle near Tirupparankundram-Pasumalai junction on Monday.

Following a tip-off, Collector S. S. Jawahar ordered a special team to intercept vehicles coming into the city at Tirupparankundram. A search revealed that 60 bags were hidden in the vehicle.

While the revenue staff detained the van driver and handed him over to the police, two other rice smugglers escaped from the spot. The seized rice was deposited with the government depot.
